Classical music

This group provides an opportunity for members to expand their knowledge and increase their enjoyment of classical music and will be suitable for beginners and those who already listen to classical music but would like to know more about it.

William Ruff is the group leader. For 25 years he has been classical music reviewer of the Nottingham Post and has written over 1200 reviews of concerts and operas.

Each meeting focuses on music which will be performed in Nottingham in the near future. Typically William gives a talk about the next Nottingham Classics concert, illustrated with extracts from the works on the programme. He also introduces the current Opera North productions and occasionally concerts at Lakeside and the Albert Hall.

In 2018 the group has been introduced to works such as Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Tchaikovsky’s 4th Symphony, Dvorak’s Cello Concerto, Elgar’s Enigma Variations, Beethoven’s 4th Symphony and Brahms’ Violin Concerto.
